The Badarpur Fort was constructed by the Britishers as an important port of the Barak river to protect and safeguard the then Karimganj which was part of the British administration.

Dimasa community of southern Assam believe Badarpur Fort to be of historical significance as a treaty was signed in this fort between the British and the Dimasa kings during the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826.
